Kate Winslet is looking back on the royal faux pas she made while meeting King Charles for the first time.
The Oscar-winning actress was introduced to the then-Prince of Wales back in the ’90s, but apparently she wasn’t exactly royalty-ready during the interaction.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, Winslet told the story of her first-ever encounter with Charles, when an unfortunate wardrobe decision left her inadvertently wearing a see-through outfit in front of the future king.
Winslet, 50, recalled meeting Charles back in 1996 when he attended the royal premiere of Sense and Sensibility in London. Only 20 years old at the time, Winslet said she didn’t actually expect to come face-to-face with the heir to throne that night, which is why she decided to hit the red carpet in a black lace bodysuit made almost entirely out of transparent fabric.
“I sort of hadn’t realized that we were really going to meet him,” the Titanic star told Kimmel during the Tuesday, Nov. 18 episode of his late-night show. “And so I forgot about the fact that I was wearing a kind of a transparent lace outfit.”
“As he’s making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘Nipples. Nipples. Nipples. Oh my god!’ Winslet recalled while acting out the sheer panic she was feeling at the time.
But fortunately, Winslet had accessorized with a long black coat that night, and after getting a reminder from someone else in the room, she quickly wrapped the coat around herself right before greeting Charles.
“Thank god I’d worn a coat,” she said with a chuckle.

Winslet, who is from the U.K., has since become more acquainted with Charles over the years, and she now serves as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, along with a number of other notable stars like David Beckham, Sienna Miller and Rod Stewart.
Joining the foundation in June 2025, Winslet met with Charles once again over the summer at the foundation’s awards ceremony, which she attended alongside fellow Hollywood royalty, Meryl Streep.
