Tesco Ireland has launched its annual Christmas Food Collection initiative, which returns to stores nationwide from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 December.

The retailer is calling on customers to join it in helping to make Christmas brighter for families in need by contributing to the Stronger Starts Christmas Food Collection.

Since its first Christmas Food Collection in 2013, Tesco Ireland and its customers have donated almost €2.9 million worth of food, providing more than 2.3 million meals to children and families in need across the country.

Working with the Family Resource Centre Network, FoodCloud, and other local voluntary organisations, these food donations will be distributed to children and families who need it most across the festive season.

As an extra support, Tesco will top up customer donations by another 20%.

Customers are encouraged to buy one item of non-perishable food, such as porridge, rice, pasta or canned items, and place it in the collection trolley at the front of participating Tesco stores.

Volunteers from family resource centres and local charitable organisations will be present at trolleys across the weekend, to help customers with donations.

Last Christmas, Tesco and its customers donated over €320,000 worth of food, with a further €120,000 worth of food donated through this year’s Summer Food Collection.

Speaking about the initiative, Tesco Ireland communications director Rosemary Garth said, “The Christmas period can intensify food insecurity for families, particularly children who rely on school supports.

“Through our Stronger Starts Christmas Food Collection and continued investment in Stronger Starts, Tesco remains committed to playing a meaningful role in improving the well-being of children and families across the country.”
