Liverpool’s season hit a new low last night, with the Premier League champions falling to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of PSV Eindhoven at Anfield.
The result continues what has been a horrendous period on the pitch for the club, who are currently in the midst of their worst run of form in over 70 years. All of that has led to questions about the future of manager Arne Slot.
While Liverpool are traditionally a club that are hesitant to sack managers, their current slump can only continue for so long before a change is needed.
You can be certain that the club hierarchy are currently discussing potential contingency plans, with seven potential candidates to become the next Liverpool manager listed below.

7 Realistic Options To Become Next Liverpool Manager
Xabi Alonso
In a dream scenario, the Liverpool hierarchy would love to replace Arne Slot with Xabi Alonso. It remains to be seen how realistic that prospect would be.
It would certainly require the Spaniard to first leave Real Madrid, something that is not out of the realms of possibility after some discontent among the playing squad at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Liverpool likely would have hired Alonso ahead of Slot in 2024 had he been open to taking the job. This time around, the timing would have to work out smoothly in terms of both coaches leaving their current posts.
It seems unlikely at the moment, although that could quickly change over the coming weeks.
Jurgen Klopp

The elephant in the room.
Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool due to exhaustion, but he seems refreshed after almost 18 months away from management. He even hinted in a recent interview that he would consider a return to Merseyside at some stage if asked by the club.
One potential obstacle to this move would be Klopp’s relationship with Michael Edwards. The current chief executive left his previous role at the club due to a falling out with the German, only returning after his exit. It remains to be seen if the pair would be willing to overlook those past difference in order to work together once again.
As well as that, there is always the old adage in football that ‘you should never go back’.
Despite this, Klopp will be among the candidates discussed if Slot does leave the club.
Andoni Iraola
Recommended
If Arne Slot does leave over the coming weeks, Bournemouth manager Andonia Iraola could well be the favourite to replace him.
The Spaniard is one of the rising forces in football management, looking like one of the brightest coaches in the Premier League since his arrival on the south coast. His fast paced style of play is one that has suited Liverpool in the past.
As well as that, he has an excellent relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who was the man to bring Iraola to English football during his previous post at Bournemouth.
You get the sense that a midseason move would not deter Iraola, although his fit at a club of Liverpool’s stature remains uncertain. Still, it is an appointment that would make a lot of sense.
Sebastian Hoeness

While not a household name to many Premier League fans, Sebastian Hoeness was reportedly in the frame to replace Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool’s most recent managerial search.
The 43-year old has impressed at both Hoffenheim and Stuttgart, leading the latter to a second placed finish in the Bundesliga in 2024. However, they did finish ninth last season.
It remains to be seen if that campaign rules him out of the running at Liverpool this time around, but he clearly has some admirers at the club.
Oliver Glasner
The other obvious option within the Premier League, Oliver Glasner seems primed for a step up to a bigger job on the back of his success at Crystal Palace.
The Austrian has done a magnificent job at Selhurst Park, leading them to the FA Cup last season and has them scrapping it out for the Champions League places in the current campaign.
His contract at Palace expires at the end of the season, with it being suggested that he is hesitant to sign a new deal as he eyes up a job at the top table of European football.
It remains to be seen if he would be a candidate for the Liverpool role should it become available.
Steven Gerrard
Likely more of a short-term solution than a permanent appointment, Liverpool may turn to Steve Gerrard in an interim role if their preferred target is unavailable.
The Englishman’s managerial CV is spotty at best, but his status as a club legend means he could be brought in to guide the team through their current difficult period. It is a road we have seen a number of big clubs go down in recent seasons, often with mixed results.
Still, a short-term arrangement could well be on the table depending on Liverpool’s other options.
Julian Nagelsmann

Someone that will not be available until the summer of 2026, Liverpool may be willing to wait for Julian Nagelsmann if they feel he is the right man for the job.
The 38-year is said to have a number of admirers at Anfield, stretching back to his time at Hoffenheim which began almost a decade ago. The former Bayern Munich boss is set to lead Germany into the World Cup next summer, but it is said that he would be open to a club role after the end of that tournament.
He seems like an ideal fit for Liverpool, especially if they are willing to wait until the off-season.
