Call the Midwife fans could be in for a shock with multiple deaths in the upcoming Christmas specials. The show is due to return for two festive episodes very soon, with some characters heading overseas to Hong Kong.
However, new plot details have revealed that disaster strikes immediately as Fred and Violet arrive in the city only to find that the Branch House in Kowloon has collapsed with “many fatalities”.
As such, as “rescue mission is hastily organised and a team from Nonnatus make emergency plans to head out to Hong Kong”. Sister Julienne and Sister Hilda also face down a gangster who wants to get into the order’s new house, while Dr Turner and Shelagh find Esther and her son, who is unwell.
Elsewhere, back in London Mr Fischer tells Trixie and Geoffrey that he has terminal blood cancer, while Rosalind and Joyce host a festive gathering, and Sister Catherine sets out to learn what happened to Queenie’s baby.
Sister Catherine actor Molly Vevers called the latter storyline “really heart-rending” but “woven in with all the Christmas magic of the rest of the episode” (via BBC).

“Some people have died, the whole place is destroyed, and the orphans and mothers have nowhere to go. So, they get a small party together to go out to Hong Kong to see what they can do to help, try and find new premises and take care of things.”

She added that all the storylines are connected thematically in being “very much about unsteady ground” and largely “about people being displaced in some way and the changes bringing something new and fresh”.
