Louis Tomlinson had “one thing” from his One Direction days that he couldn’t get behind.

While answering fan questions for Capital FM, in promotion of his new album How Did I Get Here?, the former boy band member, 33, had a quick answer to a query about which song he most hated performing.

“Maybe some people wouldn’t answer this, but I’m not sure there was a single time I performed One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and enjoyed it,” Tomlinson said. “That always felt like a bit of a challenge.”

“What Makes You Beautiful” was the debut single from the group, which formed on The X Factor in 2010 and also included members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik. The song was an international hit and helped launch the band to stardom.

Tomlinson also revealed which unreleased song from his One Direction era he’d most like to share with fans.

“I think we wrote it for the last One Direction record album or the one before…I think it got leaked, actually — it was a song called ‘Where We Are.’ I always really, really loved that song. I was fighting for that song to make the record. It never did.”

After One Direction split up in 2015, each band member embarked on their own solo careers; they reunited in November 2024 for Payne’s funeral, after the singer died at age 31 in October of that year. Tomlinson will collaborate with Malik on a three-part Netflix series, which sees the pair traveling across America together.

How Did I Get Here?, set to release on Jan. 23, 2026, is Tomlinson’s third studio album, following 2020’s Walls and 2022’s Faith in the Future.

“I hope it feels like a reflection of how confident I am, but breezy is a real nice way of putting it,” Tomlinson told Rolling Stone UK about his upcoming record, which features the single “Lemonade.”

“It’s been a long time since, professionally and personally, I’ve been able to have a little spring in my step,” he continued. “So, hopefully that comes across in the record.”

During his segment with Capital FM, Tomlinson also revealed that he’d like to enter new territory in the music industry later in his career.

“I would actually be interested into going into the other side of music — maybe like music management or helping out with a label. I’m really interested in the development stage of artists. I think that’s really cool, so at some point. I’ll probably do that around the time I play golf, maybe in my 50s.”
