New supernatural mystery series Talamasca: The Secret Order has jumped up the Netflix UK chart after being added to the streamer this week. The new AMC show is based on Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches novels, and focuses on a young lawyer who is recruited into a secretive organisation.

Since dropping on the streamer on Monday, Talamasca has shot up the UK Top 10 series, currently sitting at the number 4 position.

Starring Dangerous Liaisons’ Nicholas Denton, the series focuses on lawyer Guy Anatole, who has just finished law school when he is approached by a senior member of the Talamasca organisation, which is committed to keeping an eye on the supernatural.

However, Nicholas soon realises he has been recruited to go undercover at Talamasca’s London Motherhouse and root out an agent who may be planning to bring down the organisation and threaten the mortal world.

The show currently sits at 64% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes from 22 reviews, IGN praising it as an “an absorbing take on the world that presents the intrigues of the shadowy Talamasca as a supernatural-infused spy thriller”.

“Talamasca is well paced across its six episodes and features a couple of genuine twists – narrative accomplishments that are few and far between in Rice’s novels,” added Slate.

Geek Girl Authority suggested that “the execution leaves something to be desired”, though it “could grow into its potential” as a series, while Decider added that the show is “entertaining enough” for Rice fans, even while they’re “not sure if the story hangs together well enough for newbies”.

“Those who make it through the clunky introduction will likely be in for the long haul,” wrote Bloody Disgusting. “Talamasca: The Secret Order is uniquely positioned to be a pivotal piece of the Immortal Universe’s puzzle with the right planning.”

Alongside Denton, Talamasca stars Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, Suspect’s Céline Buckens, The Originals’ Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Prison Break’s William Fichtner.

Talamasca: The Secret Order is streaming now on Netflix in the UK, and AMC in the US.
