The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the most impactful contemporary series, as it was a massive hit with the critics, but also with the audience because of its message. Although the original show ended this year with Season 6, Hulu is bringing the universe back with its spinoff, The Testaments.

The show is based on the book series of the same name, also by author Margaret Wood. Set 15 years after the events of the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments will tell the story of three women in the aftermath of the original show. Hulu has officially unveiled a first look at the upcoming sequel series, which includes One Battle After Another star Chase Infiniti as June’s daughter, Hannah.

Aside from the first look, Hulu also confirmed the release window for the spring, one year after the debut of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6. “A defiant coming of age story begins in April 2026 when The Testaments comes to @hulu and with #HuluOnDisneyPlus,” the caption read.

The pictures show Infiniti as Agnes, June’s daughter Hannah, whose name was changed by her adopted parents. Ann Dowd’s Aunt Lydia, one of the returning faces from the original series, also makes an appearance in the first look photos, looking at a statue of herself in her signature olive uniform.

Other pictures show several young women at the “Wives School,” which includes Shechinah Mpumlwana, Rowan Blanchard, Birva Pandya, Mattea Conforti, and Isolde Arides.

The Testaments’ logline describes the show as “a coming of age story that finds a new generation of young women in Gilead grappling with the bleak future that awaits them. For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life. Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.”

The Handmaid’s Tale longtime showrunner and creator Bruce Miller also created The Testaments, and serves as a showrunner and executive producer. Original star Elisabeth Moss, who played June Osborn, executive produces alongside Warren Littlefield, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Mike Barker, who will direct the first three episodes.

The Handmaid’s Tale Was a Massive Success

Based on Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, the dystopian show premiered in 2017 to massive critical acclaim. It ran for six seasons, following the story of June Osborn, a woman trying to survive in a new, theocratic totalitarian state called Gilead. As fertility rates plummeted because of sexually transmitted diseases and pollution, Gilead came up with a plan to divide the population into new social classes, where women had no rights.

The new society was based on an extremist interpretation of a Biblical story, where women were forced to give birth for other wealthier families. The Handmaid’s Tale chronicles June’s journey from escaping her fate as a Handmaid, and also bringing down Gilead as she tries to be reunited with her daughter, Hannah, who has been given to a wealthier family. The Testament takes place after the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, where June was still unable to reunite with Hannah, even after managing to push back against the totalitarian world.

The Testaments premieres on Hulu in April 2026.
