While he would net his first goal for the club in recent weeks, it is fair to say that the jury is still very much out when it comes to Evan Ferguson and his future at Roma.

The Irishman arrived in the Italian capital to much fanfare over the summer, signing for a season long loan with a €40million option to buy next summer. Now a few months into his tenure at the club, the Meath man has yet to make a major impact.

Ferguson has struggled for both form and fitness this season. He has also found himself out of the team for large stretches as manager Gian Piero Gasperini tried other solutions in the no.9 role.

Transfer reports emerged recently that put the 20-year old’s future at the club in doubt, rumours that have not exactly been shut down by his manager.

Roma Manager’s Evan Ferguson Comments Raise Questions About Ireland Man’s Future

Gian Piero Gasperini has a reputation for getting the most out of his forwards, but he also has a habit of quickly discarding players who he feels are not up to the required standard.

He has not been exactly glowing in his praise of Evan Ferguson this season, something that may not bode well for the player’s future at Roma.

Gasperini was asked about the prospect of Ferguson’s loan being cut short in January, a scenario he did not seem to rule out in his response despite saying the topic had yet to be discussed with the club’s hierarchy.

Ferguson’s future? I’ve never talked about it, I don’t know if the agent has.

I’ll talk about it with the club in January, if necessary. It always happens these days that there’s a lot of talk about players, then maybe one comes in, scores two goals, and changes everything.

Or maybe he plays two or three high-quality games and the assessments change.

I think it’s too early: there are so many games that can completely change the strategies.

While not an admission that the Ireland player could leave the club, it is hardly a confirmation that he will stay beyond the January transfer window.

Evan Ferguson would go on to come off the bench for the final half hour of Roma’s Serie A clash with Cagliari over the weekend, a game they would lose 1-0.

Roma have been linked with a number of strikers in recent weeks, and considering the Irishman’s struggles for playing time in recent weeks, such a move could spell a premature end to his time at the club.
