ITV Racing is back Friday with action from Cheltenham (Bangor abandoned), starting here with a handicap hurdle over 2m1f. Fortune de Mer needs a very strong pace to run at and I’m not sure he will get it. FRENCH EMPEROR is up another 7lb for a grinding success at this track last time but this gelding is improving all the time and can go in again. The success when last seen came on the back of a victory at Worcester, and Nicky Martin’s horses were all wrong last season but have been all right this term so it’s easy to expect more to come. Sean Bowen in the saddle is a big plus as well.
13:50 Cheltenham – Henrys Friend (each-way)
Now a handicap chase over an extended 3m2f. HENRY’S FRIEND is a character but he comes here on the back of a fine victory at Ascot in November and while up 3lb, he might get in the mix again. The Scottish National eighth stays well enough and is a former Reynoldstown winner so has always had some class. He looks over priced in this field and has each-way claims with Ben Jones riding for Ben Pauling.
14:25 Cheltenham – Courtland
A Veterans’ Handicap Chase over an extended 2m4f. COURTLAND can get a deserved win here for Mickey and Sean Bowen after a string of consistent efforts in defeat. This trip is ideal and he’s run well this term behind Twig at Sandown – with the form boosted at Aintree last weekend – and Hang in There at Chepstow. He has nothing in hand off 134 but still has every chance.
15:00 Cheltenham – Mister Coffey (each-way)
A Cross Country Handicap Chase over an extended 3m5f. A bit of a minefield. Everyone knows MISTER COFFEY never wins but he’s got an each-way chance once again for Nico de Boinville and Nicky Henderson. A handicap mark of 142 is workable and he ran well here in March over course and distance when fifth. He’s got lots of form that gives him every chance. The problem is he never wins.
15:35 Cheltenham – Long Draw
Here’s a handicap hurdle over 3m. LONG DRAW will be in the mix for Sean Bowen and Olly Murphy. He’s run well in both starts here this season, finishing fourth in a big field behind Ma Shantou and then in the same position in a smaller field behind Kikijo. He’s dropped 1lb which is not much but helps and he stays stronger than most.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
