Nicky Henderson has called on racing’s participants to “drum up plenty of support” for Kempton after the future of the course, home to the King George VI Chase, was plunged into doubt again at the weekend.
Jockey Club chief executive Jim Mullen, who joined in June, announced plans on Saturday for significant investment into Cheltenham and Aintree, 24 hours after the racecourse group unveiled changes and bolstered funding for Epsom’s Derby festival. However, he raised new concerns regarding Kempton’s survival when he stated the situation was “out of my hands”.
In 2017, the Jockey Club said it intended to close the track, which is just 15 miles from central London, after teaming up with the developer Redrow in a deal that would deliver up to 3,000 homes and in excess of £100 million to the racecourse group if it obtained planning approval.
