Ireland’s Robbie Keane has committed his future to Hungarian side Ferencvaros by signing a contract extension as head coach.
The Dubliner has enjoyed a brilliant period in charge of the Budapest club since his arrival in January 2025.
Ferencvaros have qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League with two games to spare after their recent victory over Rangers.
Prior to that match, Keane had addressed speculation linking him with the vacant job at Celtic, with Wilfired Nancy ultimately becoming Brendan Rodgers’ – who this week took the reins at Saudi club Al-Qadsiah – permanent successor.
“My mind is just here,” Keane said. “I am very happy here. It has been a really good year, it’s been a successful year. We won the league last year. We are doing well in Europe now. We are at the top of the league. I am really enjoying it. I work with good people here.
Keane has now won 10 European games with the side in less than a year, third in the club’s all-time list behind Tibor Nyilasi and Zoltan Blum while he guided them to the Hungarian league title last season.
They currently sit second in the table after 17 games, one point behind leaders ETO Gyor.
Keane moved into coaching in 2018 as player-manager at ATK in India and worked as an assistant to Ireland boss Mick McCarthy during his second spell in charge, and later took up a similar role under former Spurs team-mate Jonathan Woodgate at Middlesbrough.
He was part of Sam Allardyce’s staff at Leeds as they unsuccessfully tried to pull off an unlikely escape from Premier League relegation at the end of the 2022-23 season
The Republic of Ireland’s all-time leading goalscorer was in charge at Maccabi Tel Aviv for 18 months until he left the role last June.
