As the Russian military drones flew over Poland last Tuesday night, I was sleeping in my childhood home 70km from the Ukrainian border.

In the ­morning, a text message from the ­Polish ­authorities arrived on everyone’s ­mobile phone, asking people to maintain order. We kept calm and carried on, but the air we breathed that day felt heavier than usual.
