Swansea boss Vitor Matos says Adam Idah “needs love” if he is to be a success at the Welsh club, describing the Ireland striker as “a really good kid”.
Idah scored the winner in the 90th minute as the Swans came from behind to beat Welsh rivals Wrexham on Friday night. The former Celtic star was only on the pitch for four minutes after replacing Zan Vipotnik, the Slovenian striker having equalised with a deflected effort off Dominic Hyam that wrongfooted Okonkwo. Wrexham had led for nearly an hour from the 14th minute after Cameron Burgess headed into his own net from Ryan Longman’s cross.
“He’s a really good kid who needs love and who needs to feel the backing of everyone,” the Swansea head coach said after the game.
“He knows that he has that inside of the club. He needs to create this connection with the fans.
“I think [the Wrexham game] was important and we’re really happy to see what he brings in the future.”
Idah hailed the Swansea fans following the full-time whistle as the Cork native told of his joy.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling, especially in a game like that. To get a 90th minute goal is amazing, but to do it in a game like that was just amazing,” he said.
“The fans were massive, when you have the support like that it makes such a big difference for us because when you have the small details – where someone makes a tackle or wins a throw-in – they get behind those moments and really lift the team.
“They were amazing, they have been brilliant all season, they have stuck with us through some tough spells.
“So to give them a win like that just before Christmas is special, but we want to kick on from here and climb up the table.
“Hopefully that can give us a big boost, to have three wins in a row at home is really important for us and we want to push on.”
