The DunBear, created by Andy Scott, whose other public artworks include The Kelpies and the Beacon of Hope, was removed from Dunbar Business Park on Thursday.

However, it has been confirmed that the work of art, which was unveiled in 2019, will return to the town.

On Friday, Ken Ross, of Hallhill Developments Ltd, told the Courier: “He has gone to a place of safety temporarily.

“Work is about to start on the [Costa] drive-thru and there will be another announcement next week about other work.

“He has gone to a place of safety but will be re-erected when it is safe to do so.

“Work is going to be starting in the area and there will be machinery and everything else like that.

“DunBear will be back in Dunbar.

“He is an essential member of the community as far as I am concerned.”

Already, the surrounding area is home to a McDonald’s drive-thru, an Asda supermarket and petrol station, and The Pine Marten hotel.

Permission was previously given for a Marks & Spencer, Lidl and B&M on the site.

Meanwhile, an application showing a Costa Coffee drive-thru, between McDonald’s and the DunBear, also has permission.
