A beautiful, festive scene by a Donegal filmmaker is to be broadcast to an audience of tens of thousands on this evening’s ‘People’s Angelus’ on RTE One.
Pettigo woman Frances Maguire’s one-minute film, Knitting Christmas by the Fire, starring her mother, Rosie McGoldrick, airs at 6.00pm, just before the main evening news.
Accompanied by the Angelus bell, it features Rosie knitting by the open fire, with cameo appearances from her cats, Lily and Jessie!
Frances won multiple awards around the world this year with her stunning short documentary, Echoes of an Irish Lifetime, which tells the story of her uncle, Owney McGoldrick.
RTÉ reached out to her after her lecturer sent them a clip of the piece featuring her mother, which she recorded last year.
“They liked it a lot and will use it around Christmas – it’s a lovely lift to get,” Frances told Donegal Daily.
Since 2015, the national broadcaster has invited filmmakers, artists, students and members of the public to share creative ideas for the People’s Angelus, offering people of all faiths and none a moment to ‘go placidly amidst the noise’.
