Simon Mulheron was the son of Joe, the well-known former owner of Sandinos bar, who was also a folk singer and cultural activist.

Joe passed away on 13 May 2023 at the age of 76.

It has now emerged that Simon died unexpectedly at his home on 27 December 2025.

A Funeral Times death notice said he was the beloved son of Aileen and the late Joe, loving brother of Siobhán, Roisín and Eamonn and their partners Gary, Ruairí and Bronagh, devoted uncle to Eva, Darragh and Anna.

He was loved and will be sadly missed by his family and friends, it added.

Sandinos Bar posted: “Our beautiful Simon,” alongside a broken heart emoji.

Local man, Jon McCourt, who is a family friend and founder of the campaign group Survivors North West posted a tribute.

He said: “Such a sad loss, Simon was an absolute gentleman, always taking time for a chat.

“My thoughts are with his mum Aileen, Roisin, Siobhan, Eamonn. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

The United Against Racism campaign group spoke of Sandinos and Simon backing their cause.

“Absolutely devastating news,” they said.

“Sandinos Bar has been a steadfast supporter of anti-racism in this city since the day and hour it opened.

“At the heart of this was Simon. UAR send their sincerest condolences, love and solidarity to the Mulheron family and all at Sandinos.”
