A new weather warning for snow and ice has been announced for all six counties in Northern Ireland.

The yellow weather warning was issued by the UK Met Office on Friday morning and will be in effect for Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone from 5pm on Friday until 11am on Saturday, reports Belfast Live.

“Clear spells on Friday evening and overnight will allow temperatures to quickly fall below freezing, leading to the development of icy stretches, especially on untreated surfaces,” reads the warning from the Met Office.

“A scattering of wintry showers are also expected, these falling as snow over hills above 200 m, where further small accumulations of 1 to 3 cm are possible in a few places.

“Wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous, so to keep yourself and others safe: plan your route, checking for delays and road closures, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“If driving, leave more time to prepare and check your car before setting off; make sure you have essentials packed in your car in the event of any delays (warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).”

The warning comes after a cold spell throughout Ireland and the UK this week, although Ireland has avoided the worst of Storm Goretti, which has wreaked havoc in the UK on Friday.

Closer to home, there is a risk of snow and thunderstorms in parts of Munster, Connacht and north Ulster on Friday night, with temperatures expected to drop to as low as -2C in places.

Conditions are expected to become much milder on Sunday, but it will be windy with widespread outbreaks of rain, which will turn heavy in places amid the possibility of occasional hail showers.
