Death threat and non-fatal strangulation charges were yesterday brought against a man accused of choking and holding a knife to a young woman’s neck and threatening her, saying: “I will kill you.”
Sergeant John Dineen confirmed two new charges had been brought against Kevin Buckley of 5C, Shanakiel, Blarney Rd, Cork, at Cork District Court.
He said the DPP had directed trial by indictment on the charges, and on two older charges brought against him arising out of the same alleged incident.
Solicitor Aoife Buttimer said there was no application for bail in the case, and Judge Mary Dorgan remanded the defendant in custody for one week until January 16.
Garda Barry O’Shea outlined details of the allegations in an objection to bail on the earlier charges before the court.
He said gardaí were called to the scene of an incident in which it is alleged that Buckley had choked the young woman a number of times, stating: “I will kill you.”
The parties are known to each other.
“Kevin Buckley proceeded to grab a knife and hold it to her neck, threatening again to kill her. There were a number of marks visible on her neck. She stated that he held a knife to her throat. There are also red marks which she alleged were from choking.
“She also had bruising to her left arm. Kevin Buckley was highly irate, and became verbally aggressive with gardaí. Kevin Buckley began to threaten gardaí at the scene.
“Having received a report from the injured party, gardaí arrested Kevin Buckley and detained him. Kevin Buckley resisted arrest and attempted to spit at gardaí a number of times.
“Kevin Buckley was later interviewed in Togher Garda Station, where he denied the allegations. He stated he only pointed the knife… He admitted in interview that he threatened to kill himself,” Garda Barry O’Shea said in the course of an objection to bail.
The initial charges against the 26-year-old were of assault causing harm, production of a knife, and wilfully resisting arrest. Added to that were charges of threatening to kill the young woman and non-fatal strangulation or suffocation.
Sgt Dineen said the DPP directions were for trial by indictment or taking a signed plea of guilty for sentencing at the circuit court on all charges except the summary count of obstructing gardaí during the alleged incident on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Carrigrohane apartments, Riverside Farm, Cork.
Ms Buttimer asked for a precis of the evidence and memo of his interview with gardaí so that a signed plea of guilty could be considered.
