Awards season is well and truly underway, and Irish talent will be hoping to bring back some more silverware with the Golden Globes taking place tonight.

Kerry woman Jessie Buckley and Maynooth’s Paul Mescal are both up for awards for their roles as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes in the Chloé Zhao directed Hamnet.

The pair have been dominant in Hollywood this season, with Jessie Buckley picking up the Critics Choice Awards earlier in the month, and the pair both tipped for Oscar glory.

While the Academy Awards are still eight weeks away, sights are set on this evening’s Golden Globes, with the 83rd edition being held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The ceremony gets going at 5pm California time, which is 1am Irish time.

Comedian Nikki Glaser is on hosting duties, returning for the second year in a row. Among those presenting the realm of awards include Amanda Seyfried, Ayo Edebiri, Charli XCX, George Clooney and Jennifer Garner.

While Irish fans will be waiting with bated breath to see if one or both of Buckley and Mescal will be successful in their respective categories, the awards is not available to stream live in Ireland.

RTÉ have confirmed that highlights of the ceremony will air at 9pm on Monday (December 12) on both RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.

Hamnet, the big screen adaptation of the Maggie O’Farrell book by the same name, has been receiving rave reviews since it hit cinemas last month.

The story revolves around the love story between William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes, before and after the death of their son Hamnet.

Mescal and Buckley star as Shakespeare and Agnes respectively, with HAMNET their second outing as co-stars. The Irish heavyweights previously appeared in The Lost Daughter together.

The main focus is on Buckley’s Agnes, and how she and her husband’s relationship changed following the death of their child.

Last week, Jessie won the Critics Choice Award for her role as Agnes, and has since also been nominated for an Actors Award, formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The actress has been nominated for Performance by a female actor in a leading role, while Mescal received a nod for male actor in a supporting role.

Looking towards the Golden Globes on Sunday night, the pair have been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture respectively.
