A pod of dolphins was spotted in the River Lee in Cork’s city centre on Saturday, attracting a lot of attention from passers-by.

Padraig Whooley of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group told The Echo that it was not a totally unusual occurence.

“If the dolphins are fit and healthy, which they appear to be … 99 times out of 100 they manage to get themselves out of that situation.

“Members of the public, enjoy it and not try to interfere. Let mother nature run its course.”

He added: “It is not an ususual event. Now I can name at least six rivers systems that have the same species of dolphin in it right now.”
