Q I run a small manufacturing business in the midlands. I was only back at my desk for 10 minutes after the Christmas break when two employees handed in their notice – one is taking a supermarket job, and another a role at a local carpet store.

I understand that a lot of people make a new year’s resolution to change careers, but from an employer’s point of view this annual mini-exodus is frustrating and a bit worrying. How can I keep skilled people engaged and prevent more of my team from walking out the door?
