Everton fans appear to be united when it comes to Jake O’Brien’s future at the club, following another impressive performance in Sunday’s 1–0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa.

The Ireland defender played a starring role at Villa Park and even thought he had broken the deadlock in the first half when he powered home a header from a James Garner cross. That effort was ultimately ruled out, but O’Brien’s influence on the game remained clear as Everton went on to secure victory thanks to Thierno Barry’s 59th-minute strike.

Jake O’Brien originally broke into the Everton side last season under David Moyes, operating at right-back in what had been a problem position for the Toffees. He has quickly made the role his own, earning praise for his composure and defensive solidity.

However, in recent weeks, Jake O’Brien has been deployed in his more natural position at centre-half, and Sunday’s performance only strengthened the case for him to remain there.

Following the final whistle, Everton supporters took to social media in their droves, urging David Moyes to keep Jake O’Brien in the heart of defence after another assured display.

Attention also focused on the controversial VAR decision that denied the defender what would have been his first Premier League goal for the club.

Jake O’Brien was clearly onside as he headed the ball into the net, but the assistant referee flagged for offside against Harrison Armstrong, ruling that the midfielder had interfered with play despite not touching the ball. VAR backed the on-field decision.

The Premier League Match Centre later explained the call, stating:

The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR, with it deemed that Armstrong interfered with an opponent’s ability to play the ball from an offside position.

Despite the frustration, O’Brien’s performance only strengthened his growing reputation, and with fans now firmly behind him, his role under David Moyes looks increasingly secure.
