A busy footbridge in east Donegal has been closed this evening due to safety concerns.

The metal structure spans the River Finn, alongside the historic Dromore Bridge, between the villages of Crossroads and Killygordon. Constructed in 2007, concerns were raised in recent years about the deterioration of a lengthy section of the handrails.

Donegal County Council informed local public representatives that it would be closed immediately, following the receipt of an engineer’s report and assessment. The bridge carries scores of pedestrians each day, including children from the nearby Dromore National School.

Local Councillor, Patrick McGowan, was instrumental in securing funding to get the structure built almost 20 years ago.

He said that temporary traffic lights will be installed on Dromore Bridge and, as a result, vehicular traffic will be reduced to one lane in order to facilitate pedestrians.

“All local councillors informed late this evening that the bridge will be closed immediately for safety reasons,” he said.

“I will be following up on this issue immediately, ensuring that funding is found to carry out the necessary repairs. But, safety is paramount, and the council had no choice but to close the footbridge.”
