Met Éireann has issued a new Status Yellow weather warning as Ireland braces for heavy downpours in the coming days.
Following several days where most regions have experienced substantial rainfall, there seems to be no respite on the horizon. A Status Yellow rain warning was released by Met Éireann for one county this weekend, with Wicklow battered by periods of heavy rain on Saturday, particularly across elevated areas.
Additional bouts of intense downpours are predicted for later this week, with Met Éireann now releasing a new Status Yellow rain warning for three counties.
The national weather service said there will be bursts of rain which will be intense at times in Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow. The yellow rain warning will take effect there at midnight on Tuesday, January 27, and will stay active until 6pm that same day, reports the Irish Mirror.
Releasing the weather alert, Met Éireann cautioned that the heavy downpours could result in localised flooding and challenging travel conditions.
The grim conditions stem from Storm Ingrid, which has been causing chaos with Irish weather recently. The storm, which was designated by the Portuguese Met Service (IPMA), hit Ireland this weekend, delivering periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Whilst we’ve already had considerable rain in recent days, more is expected in the week ahead, with the harsh weather conditions anticipated to affect travel as continuous rain will fall across certain areas.
According to Alan O’Reilly, the weather forecaster behind the well-known Carlow Weather social media accounts, intense rainfall will batter virtually the whole nation, with the South and East facing severe flooding threats as they bear the worst of the harsh conditions.
O’Reilly stated that present meteorological models are ‘worrying’ as they indicate that substantial downpours are anticipated over the next few days – with over 100mm of precipitation predicted to fall by Thursday.
