The ‘Butcher Boy’ novelist remains true to his Irish counter-culture roots

The King of Bog Gothic – as he was affectionately crowned in 2003 – was at a funeral last week in Monaghan. Patrick McCabe gave a reading from the prayers of the faithful at the mass for a relative of his wife, artist Margot Quinn.
The writer felt all the people in the church seemed to be “at their best”. They understood the ritual and the symbols, and knew what they had to do, he says.
