A major search and rescue operation in the centre of Navan town has been stood down this evening after several hours.

Emergency services were scrambled after receiving reports of that a child was in the river at Newbridge, also known as Loreto Bridge, following a crash this afternoon. However, these reports turned out to be incorrect, gardaí say.

A Coast Guard helicopter, Meath River Rescue boats, gardaí, fire brigade and other emergency services were deployed in response to the incident, with surrounding roads also closed as a result.

There had been a minor crash between a number of cars on the bridge this afternoon, with no injuries reported.

However, the Irish Independent now understands that several calls to rescue services after the crash claiming that there was a child in the river, were incorrect.

The search and rescue operation has now been stood down, with roads being reopened.
