Two men and a woman have been arrested following the seizure of more than €470,000 worth of suspected cannabis in Cork.

As part of an intelligence-led operation, involving the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), the Cork North West Divisional Drugs Unit and Revenue Customs Service, approximately 23.6 kilograms of suspected herbal cannabis, with an estimated value of € 472,000, was seized in Cork on Wednesday.

Following the seizure, two men, aged in their 30s, and one woman, aged in her 20s, were arrested.

The three individuals are currently being detained under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at garda stations across Cork county.

SEIZED

The seized drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said this seizure forms part of Operation Tara, which is an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy that was launched by the Garda Commissioner in July, 2021.

“Operation Tara aims to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels — international, national, and local — involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, and local sale and supply of controlled drugs,” the spokesperson said.

Investigations into the seizure of the suspected cannabis are currently ongoing.
