Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrot’s extra-time goal sent AZ Alkmaar into the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup in dramatic fashion.

The Dubliner claimed an assist and plundered his 17th goal this season for the club to seal a 2-1 win over FC Twente and ensure a place in the last four of the competition.

Parrott was involved in the opening goal of the game, a delicate header back inside the area to set-up Matej Sin in the ninth minute. Kristian Hlynsson levelled for the visitors just after the hour mark before the game moved into extra time.

The 23-year-old, who scored a hat-trick in the previous round against Ajax and continues his fine form ahead of the upcoming World Cup play-offs in March, proved to be the match-winner in extra time.

Parrott was quick to react in the 97th minute when a shot from outside the area was blocked by a team-mate. The ball broke kindly for the red-hot striker, who dug it out of his feet with the first touch before lashing home with an emphatic left-footed strike.

It takes Parrott’s tally to 22 goals this season for club and country as Alkmaar bid for a first Dutch Cup since 2013.
