The Galway hurlers are in the midst of a clear transition at senior level.

With established names like David Burke stepping away, younger faces are being handed opportunities, and there has been a noticeable shift around the Tribesmen this spring. Jason Rabbitte and Cillian Trayers are among those beginning to emerge, part of a new wave entrusted with carrying the county forward as they search for consistency following back-to-back league defeats to Tipperary and Cork.

The Loughrea contingent, fresh from their run to January’s All-Ireland club final defeat to Ballygunner, are expected to filter back into the panel in the coming weeks. But one prominent name will not be joining them.

Big Blow For Galway As All-Ireland Club Star Opts Out Of Panel For 2026

It is understood that Anthony Burns will not be involved with the Galway Senior hurlers for the remainder of the 2026 campaign due to work and travel commitments, as first reported by Maurice Brosnan of the Irish Examiner.

Anthony Burns was a useful attacking option for Galway in 2025. He struck 2-3 in Galway’s league clash with Clare 12 months ago, a performance that underlined his eye for goal, and later featured off the bench in the Leinster final defeat to Kilkenny.

Next up for Michéal Donoghue and his Galway side is a trip to Birr to face an Offaly who are also winless after their opening two game. The Faithful have not beaten the Tribesmen in a competitive fixture since their league win in February 2001, also in Birr, but Galway will be wary of leaning too heavily on history as they attempt to steady the ship and build momentum in this new era.
