Stranger Things is officially returning with a spin-off this year, featuring fan-favorite heroes returning, but one star seemingly confirms Eleven’s fate before her return to Netflix this year.

Netflix’s sci-fi series that dominated the charts and conversations during the last few months officially ended after a decade, but not everyone was happy with how the characters’ stories were wrapped up, including Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) as her fate remained largely ambiguous with many saying she died, but others holding out hope she escaped during the final moments of season 5.

Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in Stranger Things, had an interview with The View to promote his upcoming animated movie, Goat. The star addressed the fate of his on-screen best friend Eleven as the internet still remains divided on whether the character survived the explosion that destroyed the Upside Down and the Abyss. When asked by The View hosts if Eleven survived the ordeal, McLaughlin stated:

“I think she’s…gone. I think rest in peace, Eleven.”

During the final moments of season 5, Max (played by Sadie Sink), Dustin (played by Gaten Matarazzo), Will (played by Noah Schnapp), Lucas (played by McLaughlin), and Mike (played by Finn Wolfhard) reunite in Mike’s basement to play one last game of Dungeons & Dragons. This occurs 18 months after Eleven’s apparent sacrifice, to which Mike relays his theory that Eleven is not really gone, and she managed to escape.

McLaughlin isn’t the only Stranger Things star to believe Brown’s character had died, as Sink had an interview with Jimmy Fallon, and she confirmed that she believes Eleven had died, and Mike’s theory was simply a way of “coping” for the group of friends. McLaughlin reiterated that the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, always had the intention to “leave a level of optimism that the show always had.”

Eleven will be returning to Hawkins. However, it will be as an animated character voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt in a spin-off series titled Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. The series introduces a new character named Nikki and has suggested it could potentially change the lore fans know so well. A lot of the plot has largely been kept secret, but the series will be released on Netflix on April 23.

Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix now, with the spin-off Tales from ’85 being released on April 23.
