A new survey shows Limerick men splashed out generously for Valentine’s Day last year.
Limerick men are officially some of the most romantic in the country, according to new spending data from AIB.
As the city prepares for Valentine’s Day 2026, figures from last year show that local men are far more likely to splash out on flowers than their counterparts in almost any other county.
With an average spend of €68 on a single bouquet, Limerick men ranked second only to Kerry in the national “love league.”
This sits well above the national average of €62 and dwarfs the spend in counties like Westmeath and Donegal, where men spent as little as €54.
The “AIB Spend Trend” report reveals that despite stormy conditions last year, customers spent a staggering €143 million on February 14th.
The peak hour for last-minute romantics in Limerick was between 4 pm and 5 pm, as workers made a dash for florists and supermarkets on their way home.
Interestingly, while women usually dominate supermarket shopping, men took over after 5 pm on Valentine’s Day, with an average spend of €25 on “dine-in” deals and treats.
However, the romantic landscape for 2026 faces a major distraction.
This Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday and coincides with Ireland’s Six Nations clash against Italy at the Aviva Stadium.
Adrian Moynihan, AIB’s Head of Consumer, expects this to cause a significant shift in spending, with rugby and romance going head-to-head for the public’s attention and budget:
“Valentine’s Day spending patterns continue to evolve, reflecting not only our love of flowers, food, and supermarket bargains, but also the influence of societal – and sporting – events. With Ireland set to face Italy in the Six Nations on Valentine’s Day this year, we anticipate a lively atmosphere and a shift in spending trends, especially in Dublin. Understanding these spending habits is crucial, as it enables us to help businesses tailor their offerings and ensures we continue to meet the evolving needs of our customers.”
