Actor James Van Der Beek has died at the age of 48, a year on from being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, as his wife announced his death and tributes flooded in for the ‘legend’

James Van Der Beek has passed away. The late actor, best known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on August 31, 2023.
He decided to keep his diagnosis private until November 2024.
Announcing his passing, James’ wife Kimberely stated: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Since the news broke, tributes have flooded in, with Benito Skinner describing him as: “A legend in every way.”
Carla Cecato added: “Rest in peace. God please take care of the family. In Jesus’s name.”, reports the Mirror.

Adam Richman expressed his shock, saying: “What? ! ? ! Can’t fathom this – met him a few times, each nicer than the last. What a vibrant gentleman. Makes no sense.”
Hayley Kiyoko also paid tribute, stating: “OMG I am so incredibly sorry for you and your family. He always led with kindness and love. His light will carry on.”

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office reported James’ death at 6.44am local time. No cause of death was provided.
When James revealed his diagnosis, he shared that he and his family had been dealing with it privately, adding that they had been “Taking steps to resolve it”.

Last November, he revealed plans to auction personal memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, aiming to offset expenses related to his continued medical care.
Supporters had the opportunity to acquire the costume he donned in Dawson’s Creek’s debut episode, anticipated to fetch up to £3,000. Additionally, the necklace Dawson presented to his on-screen love interest Joey for the prom was available, with estimates suggesting it could command around £40,000.
James was due to reunite with his his Dawson’s Creek castmates in September last year, but made the decision to withdraw due to ongoing health issues.
