Derry came through a chaotic Division 2 encounter in Newbridge on Saturday night, defeating Kildare 3-15 to 1-18 despite spending almost the entire game with 14 men and surviving a spell where they were reduced to 13 and even 12 men at one point.
The Oak Leaf County had to dig deep after a dramatic opening that saw Conor Glass dismissed just six minutes into the game, while Kildare later lost Alex Beirne to a red card of their own before half-time.
But it was the incident involving Conor Glass and Callum Bolton that quickly became the main talking point on League Sunday.
RTÉ Pundits Clash Over ‘Very Soft’ Red Card For Derry’s Conor Glass
Footage of the moment has since emerged online, showing the Derry midfielder involved in an off-the-ball coming together with Callum Bolton. As the two players meet, the Kildare man goes to ground, prompting referee David Gough, who was positioned close to the incident, to immediately stop play and issue a straight red card.

Speaking on RTE’s League Sunday show, Cora Staunton described the incident and questioned whether referee David Gough had made the decision too hastily.
Conor Glass is actually being blocked as he’s going to go for a kickout. David Gough is very very quick to take out the red card and give it. We can see when it’s slowed down here, there’s very little contact, I think it’s a very very harsh red card Conor Glass.
Speaking about the Glass incident and Ales Beirne’s red card Tyrone legend Peter Canavan questioned players going down too easily and tricking officials.
They weren’t red cards. Players do that, but should they be fooling officials in the way that they did there, I don’t think so.
The early dismissal left Derry facing an uphill task, one that became even steeper later in the game when Conor Doherty and Niall Loughlin were both sin-binned, leaving the visitors down to 12 men at one stage.
Despite that, Derry found a way.
Shane McGuigan led the scoring with 1-5, while Lachlan Murray added 1-3 on a night when conditions were far from. For Kildare, Brian McLoughlin struck 1-2 and Ben Loakman contributed an impressive 0-10, but they could not capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Speaking afterwards to Colm Parkinson, Derry manager Ciarán Meenagh admitted he had not seen the incident that resulted in Glass’s dismissal.
The game itself never lacked drama, but the emergence of footage showing the red card moment is likely to keep the debate surrounding the decision running in the days ahead.
