The second season of British detective drama Ellis, which first premiered on Channel 5 in 2024, is coming soon, it’s been revealed in an update. The broadcaster’s official Instagram has shared a teaser clip, along with the caption: “When things don’t go to plan, there’s only one name to call…”

The post also confirms that “DCI Ellis is back”, although a more precise release date has yet to be announced.

Fans have been quick to jump into the comments to share their excitement, with lots of praise for the “brilliant” series and the “fantastic” lead actor Sharon D Clarke.

Clarke, whose previous roles include the award-winning Mr Loverman and BBC legal drama Showtrial, stars as the titular inspector, who has drawn comparisons to ITV’s beloved Vera.

“If you like Vera, you’ll like this show,” one fan suggested on IMDb, going on to praise dramas with “super grumpy smart detectives”. “Best show since Vera,” another exclaimed, while a different viewer said: “Reminds me a bit of Vera; both leads have traits in common but are enough different to be interesting…”

Detective Ellis is sent in to sort out failing investigations across the UK, alongside her police partner DS Harper (played by Outlander star Andrew Gower). It was previously announced that Ellis, created by Siân Ejiwunmi-Le Berre with Paul Logue, would be back for a second series, with three two-hour episodes.

“I am thrilled to return as DCI Ellis,” star Sharon D Clarke said following the announcement. “The response to the first series was overwhelming, and I am excited to continue this journey with such a talented team, especially with the wonderful Andrew Gower by my side.”

“Ellis is a character who resonates deeply,” she added, “and I can’t wait for audiences to see what we have in store for her and Harper in series two.”

In its own statement, Acorn TV noted the show was “an instant fan-favourite” for its audience, also praising the critical response to the show’s “smart storytelling brought to life by the incomparable Sharon D Clarke and Andrew Gower”.

“We could not be more excited to dive in on a second season of unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat cases with this dynamic pair,” it finished.

Ellis season 2 is coming soon, and is set to air on Channel 5 and Acorn TV.
