Six years in from when we last got emotional over a bunch of toys, Pixar has hit us with a new trailer for the hotly-anticipated Toy Story 5. The footage, which you can watch above, features a reunion for Woody and Buzz Lightyear as they team up to save their pals from a tech takeover.

A follow-up to 2019’s Toy Story 4, the fifth film redirects the focus on the core group of beloved toys after 2022’s spin-off Lightyear marked a departure with Buzz’s origin story.

As Bonnie is gifted a frog-like tablet called Lilypad, voiced by Past Lives’ Greta Lee, Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the other toys fear they may be discarded once again.

Joining forces with a poncho-wearing Woody (Tom Hanks), who returns from his Toy Story 4 mission to help abandoned toys, and Buzz (Tim Allen) and his high-tech duplicates, the Multi-Buzz, the gang embarks on a mission to restore playtime to its former, non-digital glory.

The clip includes a reunion between Woody and Buzz, who shake hands and hug upon meeting again as a stern Buzz says: “It’s been too long, cowboy.”

This relatively peaceful reunion, however, won’t last long. The two soon engage in the bickering that made their friendship so endearing in Toy Story, back when astronaut Buzz was the new toy on the block.

“It’s good to see them fighting again,” Mr Potatohead says as the duo resume their antics with ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ playing in the background.

The fifth outing in the Toy Story franchise features a stacked voice cast, with familiar and new characters joining in.

Among the returning toys are Tony Hale as Forky, Melissa Villaseñor as Bonnie’s knife toy Karen Beverly, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Kristen Schaal as triceratops Trixie, and Keanu Reeves as Canadian biker Duke Caboom.

John Ratzenberger and Wallace Shawn are also back as Hamm and Rex respectively, with Blake Clark lending his voice once again to Slinky Dog.

Meanwhile, Ghostbusters’ Ernie Hudson has taken over the role of Combat Carl from OG star Carl Weathers, who passed away in 2024. Mr and Mrs Potatohead are now voiced by Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino, who replace the original late stars, Don Rickles and Estelle Harris.

Toy Story 5 also features a new voice for Mr Pricklepants, as the thespian hedgehog previously voiced by Timothy Dalton and Robin Atkin Downes is now played by John Hopkins.

Among the Toy Story newcomers are Scarlett Spears as the new voice of Bonnie, Craig Robinson as GPS hippo toy Atlas, Shelby Rabara as excitable camera toy Snappy, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, and Matty Matheson as tech-fearing toy Dr Nutcase.

Toy Story 5 releases in cinemas on 19 June.
