The last chapter in the story of Jack Bauer has seemingly been written. The 24 character’s performer, Kiefer Sutherland, recently revealed that the fan-favorite Fox series could be returning for another season in the near future.

In a new interview with Montreal Now with Aaron Rand (via TVLine), Sutherland shared that former 24 showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon has an idea for a new 24 season that would close out Jack Bauer’s story. “Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like. Before, the material had not been written, so I would have to say, ‘I’m not the one that’s in the way.’ [But] something has been written,” the actor revealed, adding, “I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong.”

Before 24 fans get too excited about the possibility of another Jack Bauer story, Sutherland noted that they were still a long way away from a greenlight. “24 was originally with Fox. Now it’s owned by Disney because of what Fox has sold off, and so it has to go through different channels before it’s either approved or disapproved,” the actor explained. “Like everybody else, it’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left kind of wide open. So, fingers crossed. There’s a chance. We’ve taken some considerable steps forward.”

24 Had a Unique Premise That Kept Viewers Captivated

Created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, 24 initially ran for eight seasons and 192 episodes on Fox from 2001 to 2010. The drama series was known for its unique premise, with each season covering 24 consecutive hours in the life of American counter-terrorist federal agent Jack Bauer. Further driving home this premise was the fact that each episode used the real-time method of narration, which was emphasized by the display of split screens and a digital clock. This real-time premise was also used for the TV movie 24: Redemption, although shortened to a two-hour window, and the revival Live Another Day. The latter marked the last time fans saw Sutherland’s Bauer, as the finale showed him being taken into Russian custody and ushered into a Moscow-bound helicopter.

At this time, it’s unclear what form a new 24 revival might take. It’s also unknown where the revival might land, with the two options likely being on its original network Fox or on the Disney-owned streaming services Disney+ and Hulu. The latter is the current streaming home for all nine seasons of 24 as well as its short-lived 12-episode spinoff 24: Legacy, which was set after the events of Live Another Day but followed a new character, ex-United States Army Ranger Sergeant Eric Carter, portrayed by Corey Hawkins, with Carlos Bernard’s Tony Almeida being the only main 24 alum to return for the series.
