Byrnes Family Butchers in Ballyvolane
A popular family butchers in Cork has paid a touching tribute to the generations of loyal customers over the past 100 years. What started as a single butchers’ shop grew to 15 shops and a local factory as the Byrne family grew the business and served their community. But the legacy is ending as they close the door of the last remaining Byrnes Butchers for the final time next month.
Customers have said it will be a “big loss” for the northside after so many years in business.
Leonard from Byrnes Family Butchers in Ballyvolane said that, like many businesses up and down the country, they have felt the pressure of increased operating costs in recent years, making it too hard to keep going. They have made the tough decision to close the business, with its final day on March 14.
He told Cork Beo that it has been “an honour” to serve the people of Cork since the 1930s, but that “operating costs, rent increases and a complete disregard by the government to support SMEs” have led to the decision to shut.
In a touching social media post to the many customers of Byrnes over the past decades, he wrote that they have enjoyed serving their community for all these years – and that the memories and huge support of the business “will never be forgotten.”

He shared a collection of nostalgic photos from throughout the years, captioned ‘thank you for all the memories.’ Leonard wrote: “After almost 100 years, Byrnes Butchers will close its doors for the final time on March 14th, 2026. Since around 1930, Byrnes Butchers has had the privilege of serving the people of Cork — not just as a business, but as part of everyday life. It’s been there for Sunday roasts, Christmas dinners, celebrations, and the simple weekly shop.
“From a single shop to as many as 15 stores and a bustling local factory, generations of the Byrne family built something truly special. Over time, that number slowly faded — until now, the door will close on the last remaining shop.”
He paid tribute to the staff and regular customers who made the well-known local butchers so special. Leonard said it has been his “privilege” to serve a community that values shopping local so dearly, as Byrnes has become a staple in Ballyvolane
He said: “But what has always made this place special was never just the history — it was the people. The familiar faces across the counter. The chats, the laughter, and the trust shown week after week, year after year.
“For me, it has been a privilege to serve this community and to carry on a name that means so much to so many. As we approach our final weeks, I want to say thank you. To every loyal customer, and to all the staff past and present who made Byrnes what it was, your support, kindness, and friendship will never be forgotten.
“While the doors will close on March 14th, the memories and legacy of Byrnes Butchers will live on in homes and hearts across Cork. Thank you for everything, Leonard”
Scores of customers and former staff took to the comments section to share their fond memories and wish all the workers and owners well after the closure. Many said the closure would be a “big loss” for Ballyvolane.
One customer wrote: “Ye will be missed especially at Christmas for the unbelievable turkey & ham supplied for many, many years,” while another added: “Best of luck in your future. I have many great memories working with the team there. A great work culture and always a great laugh.”
A third wrote: “So sad to see this great shop close, the customer service and meat quality was top notch.” A fourth added: So sorry to hear this news, Leonard. It’s always been a pleasure to shop here. You’ll all be sadly missed. It’s a big loss to Ballyvolane and the northside. I’m wishing you all the best for the future. Thanks for all the chats and great food.”
