A Mayo-based Senator has said that private wires will provide a “great opportunity” to “realise economic development” in the county.

Fine Gael’s Mark Duffy was speaking following a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Climate, Environment, and Energy which was conducting pre-legislative scrutiny of the Private Wires Bill.

Currently, only the ESB can provide wires that bring electricity from a generator to a customer, but privately built wires are set to be allowed in certain circumstances.
