Rats have been captured on camera scurrying and swinging from Morrisons trolleys, leaving one shopper feeling “sick”.

The footage appears to show a large rat climbing to the top of a metal cage outside Morrisons Daily on Househillwood Road in Nitshill, Glasgow, on 24 February.

A second rodent can be seen scampering along the pavement and entering the cage from below. The trolley is positioned on a pavement outside the supermarket, and there are also boxes and litter scattered on the ground.

The sight has left one shopper feeling “sick” and he said it is now a reason for him “not to shop” any more at that particular branch, reported GlasgowLive, reports the Mirror.

He said: “They are running about outside of the shop doors, I seen two in the video but there could be loads more. To think we eat and drink stuff that rats could of ran over. It is well below standards.”

Numerous people have also taken to social media to complain, with one person saying: “They’re everywhere sadly.”

Morrisons has since launched an investigation after becoming aware of the incident earlier this week. The supermarket chain said it took “immediate action” and is urgently examining what occurred.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said: “We treat food safety and hygiene very seriously. As soon as we became aware of an isolated issue outside Morrisons Daily Nitshill on Wednesday we took immediate action. We are urgently investigating this and are taking appropriate measures to manage the situation.”

Meanwhile, a pest controller has warned that rats are becoming an increasingly serious problem due to food waste. Mick Muldoon of Pestforce, who works in north London, said it’s not uncommon to see 40 rats in one bin in broad daylight these days.

He highlighted it wasn’t too long ago bin collections were once a week – now it’s once a fortnight. He said this leads to local residents essentially “fly tipping.” This generates substantial food waste which attracts rodents.

He suggested that a telltale warning sign of rats on your property is birds of prey circling overhead – this indicates there are rats beneath. Mick told The Mirror: “We are in a perpetual cycle – the conditions are just so. Rats in particular are a very clever and adaptable animal. There are a lot of construction works that disturb rat nests – we are disrupting them and providing them with more food and harbourage.”
