There are around 100 pubs and bars in the city of Cork, but despite some strong competition there is one boozer that stands head and shoulders above the rest

If you’re planning to visit any city in Ireland, it’s a good idea to sample a wide variety of its pubs. But sometimes you hit on a hostelry that is so perfect it’s hard to drag yourself out of there and try somewhere new.

That was my experience with the 130-year-old Sin É on Coburg St., Cork. Voted one of the best places in the world to spend St Patrick’s Day, Sin É also used to be one of the best places to get a haircut. The pub’s upstairs room was for many years rented by a barber.

The pub’s only downside is floor space. It’s a tiny bar at the best of times, and with the regular traditional Irish band taking up four or five chairs at the back of the pub things can get a little cramped.

Things only get more crowded if the occasional international superstar show up. After his sellout concert at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 2024, Bruce Springsteen popped in for a pint and played a few numbers to delighted Sin É patrons.

Even without impromptu appearances from global music icons, the tiny pub on Coburg St is a fantastic place to while away a rainy afternoon.

But, I’d remind you, if you’re the kind of drinker who likes to sit around a table with friends and play a game or two of cards while you savour your Guinness, be sure to get there early. The Sin É is very much on the tourist trail these days and it tends to fill up early.

The pub’s name roughly translates to “That’s it,” and certainly once you’ve found it, your search for the perfect spot may well be over.

Whether or not the Sin É serves the city’s best Guinness is very much a subjective question. For my €7, the nearby Old Oak supplied a marginally superior pint. But when it comes to questions of atmosphere, service and music selections the Coburg St pub can’t be beaten.

I’m not the only person that feels that way. One recent TripAdvisor review calls it “The best pub in the world,” and even among the more negative assessments the Sin É is still hailed as “one of the best pubs in Cork.”

With a small pub that caters to a tight-knit community of locals there’s always the concern that outsiders might feel a bit frozen out, but that really wasn’t my experience.

Most of the locals were friendly enough, and indeed one abundantly refreshed young woman was so over-friendly that she was eventually escorted off the premises by security staff.

For my part, I managed to remain in my seat from lunchtime until the place closed. It’s certainly my top recommendation if you’re visiting Cork, but try to avoid mid-February. That’s when I tend to go, and I like to get a seat.
