The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) have issued an urgent warning after toys from several different shops across Ireland have been recalled due to the presence of asbestos.

Asbestos is a prohibited substance throughout the EU as it presents a health hazard. Last week, a My Living World, Worm World Kit was recalled because it may contain asbestos.

This kit is designed for housing worms so children can observe them. Now, HTI Toys are initiating a recall of Stretcherz Toys, reports RSVP Live.

The products pose a health risk as the sand within the product could contain asbestos.

In a statement on their website, the CCPC wrote: “Affected products have been sold by Aldi, Ken Black / KB Toys And Gifts, The Works, Tesco Ireland, TK Maxx / Homesense, and Smyths. Other retailers may also be affected. The CCPC will update this notice when more information is available.”

In accordance with the stance in the UK, the CCPC is advising consumers who possess the product in their home to follow certain steps:

Stop using the product immediately.Place the product in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal.Prior to disposal contact your place of purchase to request a refund.

You can see all the barcodes that are impacted on the CCPC website.

In the recall for the My Living World, Worm World Kit, the CCPC stated: “The product may present a health risk as the sand included in the kit may contain tremolite asbestos. Tremolite asbestos is a naturally occurring asbestos which was detected in some samples of the product after laboratory testing. Asbestos is a banned substance across the EU because it poses a risk to health.

“Scientific Laboratory Supplies Limited (SLS Ltd) is carrying out a recall of this product from several schools it has supplied in Ireland. The CCPC has been in contact with The Health and Safety Authority (HSA), SLS Ltd and the schools regarding this recall.”

The product has also been sold and distributed through a number of Irish retailers. The retailers confirmed to date are:
