Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have spent more than a decade carefully keeping their relationship out of the public eye—making her surprise appearance alongside Gosling on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday night all the more unexpected.

Gosling, who stopped by the NBC late-night show to promote his new film Project Hail Mary, revealed during his interview that it was Mendes’ birthday before asking the audience—which was filled with teachers—if they’d be willing to help him sing “Happy Birthday.”

“Now here’s the thing,” Gosling joked. “You might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.”

Moments later, an apparently unsuspecting (and un-mic’d) Mendes was escorted into the studio, drawing cheers from the crowd. She briefly addressed the audience to thank the teachers in attendance before the room broke into a rendition of “Happy Birthday,” accompanied by the North Bergen High School marching band and a blast of confetti.

After the serenade, Mendes thanked the audience and planted a kiss on Gosling.

The moment marked a rare public appearance together for the longtime couple, who first met while filming the 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines. Despite their high-profile careers—including Oscar nominations and blockbuster roles—the pair have kept their relationship—and family life with their two daughters—away from the spotlight.

The couple’s Tonight Show appearance came just days before Gosling returns to Studio 8H to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, with musical guest Gorillaz.
