Boyfriend on Demand follows a straightforward rom-com formula: a woman is overworked and begins considering her romantic options, unaware her perfect match is already right in front of her. In Netflix’s dystopian K-drama romance, however, the titular app (Boyfriend on Demand) offers virtual reality dates that transport the protagonist across different time periods, locations, and occupations in pursuit of love.
Soon, a chasm forms between the main character’s romantic exploits and her very sense of reality. A once pragmatic, diligent worker becomes consumed by her romantic fantasies, and the addictive nature of the app only makes it more difficult to pull away. There to ground her, however, is her rival coworker— whom she finally begins seeing in a new light.
While the K-drama’s sci-fi elements may seem unsettling at first glance, Boyfriend on Demand is still a comforting romantic comedy. The dark implications of the central dating technology are mostly swept under the rug, allowing the main romance to unfurl as a pleasant comedy of errors and exploration of enemies-to-lovers tension rather than a gritty, borderline cyberpunk act of rebellion.
Despite its ambitious storytelling, Boyfriend on Demand is compacted to a mere 10 episodes, yet it never feels rushed nor unnecessarily drawn out. Aside from the VR dating, there are overarching plots related to the main characters’ jobs as webtoon producers, as well as personal conflicts that add high stakes to Boyfriend on Demand’s unconventional romance.

At the heart of Boyfriend on Demand is Jisoo as Seo Mi-rae. She begins as a devoted webtoon producer whose dedication to her work leaves very little time for a personal life, including dating. After trying Boyfriend on Demand, Mi-rae finds herself drawn to the uncanny, perfect romances created in the app, while her real life suffers for it.
Acting opposite Jisoo is an iconic K-drama male lead: Seo In-guk. Known primarily for romantic dramas like Doom at Your Service and thrillers like Death’s Game, Seo In-guk portrays Park Kyeong-nam in Boyfriend on Demand. Boyfriend on Demand makes the perfect K-drama binge, but the Netflix original romance has broader implications for Jisoo’s career. The idol’s former roles have been incredibly divisive, with Snowdrop being shrouded in controversy from its premiere. Jisoo’s following role in zombie rom-com Newtopia was better received, though it was still regarded as an incredibly forgettable drama.
With Boyfriend on Demand, however, Jisoo has taken a major step up in her acting career. Out of BLACKPINK’s TV roles, Seo Mi-rae is sure to be remembered as one of the best. Jisoo’s talents truly shine as Mi-rae, but her anthological virtual dates display her range, essentially offering the audience mini versions of Jisoo in various classic K-drama roles.
Similarly, her chemistry with Seo In-guk is nothing short of electric. Plus, leading such a major K-drama on a platform like Netflix will undoubtedly pave the way for Jisoo to earn more starring roles.
Transitioning from singing to acting is common in the K-drama industry, but that doesn’t make it any less challenging. Jisoo seems to have finally found her footing with Boyfriend on Demand, which is a good professional omen. There’s no telling what the future will hold, but Boyfriend on Demand definitely bodes well for Jisoo’s career.
