The Republic of Ireland will hope to get their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup off to a strong start this evening.

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side welcome Hungary to the Aviva Stadium.

Captain Nathan Collins says the squad are mentally prepared for the challenge and believes an early setback won’t completely derail their campaign:

“It is a sprint, but it’s a long sprint and a lot can change, so if we do have a setback, it’s not over — it’s not fully over.

“If something doesn’t go your way, you can still get yourself back into the race.

“We have experienced some setbacks as a group before, which we didn’t like and weren’t happy with. We want to learn from that and put it right, so getting off to a good start helps everything.”

Kick-off at the Aviva Stadium is at 7:45pm.
