Independents 4 Change has requested to cancel its registration as an Irish political party.

An Coimisiún Toghcháin, or the Electoral Commission, said the Registrar of Political Parties, Art O’Leary, had given notice of his intention to approve the request for the party to be de-registered.

It means Independents 4 Change will no longer be able to stand candidates in Dáil, European or local elections, pending the decision is not appealed within a period of 21 days.

This would leave a total of 29 political parties registered in the State.

The party was formed in 2014 by Mick Wallace and Clare Daly and was intially named Independents for Equality Movement before changing its name in 2015 to Independents 4 Change.

It contested its first general election in February 2016 and enjoyed considerable success, with each of its four candidates – Mr Wallace, Ms Daly, Joan Collins and Tommy Broughan – winning a seat in the 32nd Dáil.

The party’s four TDs then formed a technical group within the Dáil with Independent TDs Catherine Connolly, Thomas Pringle and Maureen O’Sullivan.

Mr Broughan, however, left the party in July 2016, before Mr Wallace and Ms Daly both left Irish domestic politics after being elected as MEPs at the 2019 European elections.

In the 2020 General Election, Ms Collins retained her seat, however, two months later she left Independents 4 Change to form her own party, Right to Change, leaving the party with no representation in the Dáil.

Both Mr Wallace and Ms Daly failed to hold onto their seats in the 2024 European elections, and were not elected after contesting the 2024 General Election.

The party currently has one local councillor, Dean Mulligan, who was re-elected in the Swords electoral area in the 2024 local elections.
