With the club season getting underway throughout the country around this time of year, some teams are still putting in place their coaching tickets for the 2026 campaign.

It seems as though the Cork club scene will be particularly competitive this year, with some high profile appointments made in recent times.

Former Kerry manager Peter Keane will be part of the Aghabullogue setup, with Larry Tompkins linking up with Bishopstown. Another big name has now been recruited from across the border in the Kingdom.

Kerry All-Ireland Winner Lands First Management Role

The Cork Echo are reporting that Kerry All-Ireland winner Gavin Crowley is set to be appointed as the next manager of Castletownbere.

The Templenoe man was an important player for Kerry at his peak, being part of their Sam Maguire winning squad in 2022. He would retire from inter-county duties the following season at the age of 29.

Crowley has yet to manage a team at adult level, with the Castletownbere role having attracted him to the Cork club scene. He will inherit a young side, who had an average age of 21 in their opening league game last weekend according to the Echo.

The club will compete in the Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship in 2026, the grade they have competed in since 2013. They failed to advance beyond the group stage in 2025, although they did reach a semi-final as recently as 2023.

Still in his early 30s himself, their new manager will hope to improve the club’s fortunes during the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how the mix of a young playing squad and inexperienced coach will play out over the coming months.
