Donegal County Council has said it would be uneconomical to remove a large fallen tree from the River Lennon in Ramelton, despite concerns it has become an eyesore in the town.
Local Councillor Pauric McGarvey had asked the council to remove the tree that fell on the Mall side of the river two years ago during a storm.
He said it’s now one of the first things people see when entering the town.
“It’s like an eyesore when you come into Ramelton,” he told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny–Milford Municipal District.
“It’s taking away from the view of the Mall and the bridge.
“If any buses are coming down, they won’t look at the Fish House. They will look at the tree in the river,” he added.
In response, the council said an assessment had been carried out and established that the tree is not causing an obstruction to the flow of the river.
Cllr McGarvey was told: “considering that in time the tree will naturally disperse and the cost and safety implications of removing the tree, that it would be currently uneconomic to remove the tree.”
Councillor Liam Blaney suggested that if the council was not planning to remove it, someone locally may take action.
Senior Roads Engineer David McIlwaine added that any removal of a tree from the river would have to be carried out safely, which increases the cost of the operation.
