The managing director of Wexford Bus, a major transport company which carriers in excess of a million customers each year on 1,500 weekly journeys, said there has been a near 20pc increase in the price of diesel in the last week alone and that his fear is the longer the war goes on “the longer it will take prices to moderate.”

Brendan Crowley, who started the business in 1996 and was last year appointed the Coach Tourism and Transport Council of Ireland (CTTC), said wages and fuel are far and away the company’s two biggest operating costs.
