It was a tough night for Timothée Chalamet and he is sure to be heading home deflated after a rather uncomfortable evening at the Oscars.
The 30-year-old actor had seemingly high expectations for the ceremony as he was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role following his performance in Marty Supreme. His aspirations were soon dashed, however, when he encountered fierce backlash for claiming “no one cares” about opera or ballet.
Indeed, it turns out Timothée lost out on the accolade as it instead went to Michael B. Jordan for his role in Sinners. But his bad luck didn’t run out there – as it appears he also got a stern telling off by date Kylie Jenner. Here are all the awkward moments Oscar-nominated Timothée endured last night…
Overlooked at the red carpet

While Timothée may have been excited to walk the carpet, many people were interested in something else – whether they were about to witness Timothée’s girlfriend Kylie Jenner accompany him at the Oscars red carpet. But, alas, she was nowhere to be found. The Hollywood star instead arrived at the ceremony solo.
Timothée donned an all-white suit crafted by British designer Sarah Burton for Givenchy, combining it with black sunglasses as he posed on the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Whilst Kylie didn’t walk the red carpet with Timothée, she did attend the 98th Academy Awards. The 28-year-old wore a red figure-hugging Schiaparelli dress, which featured a plunging neckline.
Kylie’s red carpet snub followed her boyfriend being criticised for remarks he made during an interview with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey. The actor said: “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like, ‘Keep this thing alive even though no-one cares about this any more”.
He attempted to retract his comments, saying, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.”

Conan O’Brien presented this year’s Oscars and he launched his opening monologue by ridiculing Timothée for his remarks about ballet and opera. The 62-year-old comedian referenced reports of heightened security at the ceremony after it was suggested to be due to the ongoing war in Iran.
However, Conan jested it was actually due to “concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities” following Timothée’s contentious comments. He added, “They’re just mad you left out jazz.”
Timothée wasn’t the only celebrity Conan targeted and he soon turned his attention to musician Kid Rock. “Tonight could get political,” Conan warned.
“And if that makes you uncomfortable, there’s an alternate Oscars hosted by Kid Rock. It’s at the Dave and Buster’s down the street.”
Conan wasn’t the only celebrity to target Timothée at the Oscars. Alexandre Singh, one of the winners for Live Action Short Film, also took aim at the actor.
“That is why we make films, isn’t it? Because we believe that art can change people’s souls. Maybe it takes 10 years time, but we can change society through art, through creativity, through theatre and ballet,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Later on in the ceremony, one of the night’s most talked-about performances also appeared to take aim at the recent backlash. A star-studded rendition of Sinners song I Lied to You ended with acclaimed dancer Misty Copeland taking centre stage – a moment many fans saw as a powerful statement celebrating the very art forms at the centre of the debate.

A lipreader has suggested things weren’t going well between Timothée and his girlfriend at the Academy Awards. During a behind-the-scenes snippet from the event, the couple were spotted sitting in the front row.
Timothée turned to an unseen individual as he mimicked shooting a gun at them with his fingers. He bit his lower lip before turning back to Kylie and uttering something to her, with the two then looking back to where Timothée was previously turned to.
According to lipreader Nicola Hickling, Kylie said to Timothée, whilst rolling her eyes, “Now you’re being a child, so shut up.”
She suggested Timothée had also said something to his girlfriend, but it wasn’t readable due to the angle.
Sister snub?

Away from the stage, an uncomfortable moment between Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet’s sister Pauline quickly went viral.
Footage showed Pauline approaching her brother before Jenner attempted to get her attention from nearby, even reaching out for a hug.
Viewers online were quick to weigh in on the seemingly frosty interaction.
“Looks like she’s never met her before in her life… This is what a PR relationship looks like,” one wrote.
Another added: “The awkwardness between them!”

Following that strange interaction, lipreader Nicola Hickling commented on one moment between the group, claiming Timothée asked his sister to “go easy” on Kylie, according to the Mirror.
As they socialised between awards, Timothée was seen turning to his sister and, according to Nicola, asking, “Where are you sitting?” After she pointed to her seat, Kylie reached out to shake her hand and seemingly compliment her outfit.
They shared an embrace before Timothée and Pauline struck poses for photographs together. According to the lipreader, after he enquired about his sister’s wellbeing by asking, “How you doing?” Timothée appeared to lean in and whisper, “Could you go easy on her?” Pauline, according to the lipreader, responded, “Okay,” before Timothée reiterated himself, saying, “I want you to go easy on her.”

Kylie was spotted chatting with actress Elle Fanning at the 98th Academy Awards, but lipreader Nicola Hickling suggested their exchange hinted at trouble in paradise for Kylie and her film star beau.
According to Nicola, Kylie turned to Elle to enquire if the 30 year old appeared “cold.”
Nicola claimed Kylie asked, “Don’t you think he’s gone a bit cold?” Elle responded, “I didn’t notice,” after appearing to uncomfortably fidget with her necklace.
