Best actress nominee Jessie Buckley said portraying Agnes Shakespeare in “Hamnet” was a role that met her at the perfect time in her life and helped her prepare for motherhood.
Jessie Buckley arrives on the Oscars red carpet as a nominee for Best Actress for “Hamnet.”
“Sometimes stories just meet you at a moment of your life. For me, at that time, I really wanted to become a mother, and I wasn’t a mother, and I met this incredible force of nature who was both strong and tender, and she taught me the capacity of love a mother can have. I was changed after I got to live beside her and inside her,” Buckley said of Agnes.
This is Buckley’s second Oscar nomination. She said it’s an honor to have so many loved ones from Ireland cheering her on.
“I don’t take it for granted what this community is and what it means to celebrate each other. It’s kind of overwhelming in some capacity to be here. You just never, ever, ever think when you’re growing up that it’s going to be a real thing,” Buckley said.
“Hollywood was so exotic. Making a film was so exotic to me growing up. The fact that I am here with a film that I am so proud of, and to be so celebrated and celebrating all of the incredible art that was made this year. I feel so proud. I feel full of joy. I just can’t wait to have a really great time,” she continued.
